High density polyethylene (HDPE) resin, designated with the #2 resin identification code, is commonly used to produce bottles and jugs, including milk jugs and detergent bottles, containers used for cosmetics and pills, as well as other rigid packaging and products such as 5-gallon buckets and crates. HDPE is also used for industrial and manufacturing products, including pipes and 55-gallon drums. HDPE is a desirable resin due to its strength, versatility, barrier to moisture, and resistance to chemical compounds. There are commonly two grades of rigid HDPE in the commercial and residential recycling stream: blow molded (plastic bottles, jugs) and injection molded (tubs, lids, crates and buckets), corrosion-resistant piping, geomembranes and plastic lumber.
